Winter is the perfect time for stories, but since it’s 2021, this is not a classical one.
This is the story of our crazy world record which we dedicate to all souls out there who need remembering that anything is possible.
We’ve been inspired by others and we humbly hope we’ll inspire you. Dare. Dare to dream no matter how impossible it might sound, and after you’re done with the dreaming part, get to work.
That’s what we did. It was January,19th, 2021, and we were freezing happily on the field. D Day had finally arrived. The forecast was on our side. The wind on the ground was somewhere between 4 – 6 kmph which is ideal for liftoff.
We assigned our jumpmaster and our ground control, we checked the wind and decided upon our landing areas, we checked our gear, we recapped the emergency procedures and our exit spots.
All procedures for the balloon set-up had started at 9.45 and at 10.45 we were ready to fire. The ground was covered with fresh snow and the view looked like it was from a fairytale.
When we reached 2000 metres altitude the cloud bank was under us and it seemed like we were in the middle of the ocean, theballoon fabric is like a giant sail after all.
Poetry aside, we were there to perform not to contemplate. The pilot confirmed the balloon was steady and gave us the OK.
The procedures for the transition between the basket and the platform started immediately, timing is of the essence in any skydiving situation since you are always at the mercy of the elements.
We had rehearsed this transition many times, but in a controlled environment with the basket and platform lifted a few meters in the air.
I’m afraid of heights, ironically, since I’m a skydiver so part of my training was not to look down until I could stand on the platform.
You can train in a simulated environment as much as you like but the reality hits exactly when you’re at 2000 meters in the air preparing to leave the safety of the basket. That’s basically the first real training. Luckily, everything went smoothly. I stepped on the treadmill and had the most amazing run of my life. It was mind-blowing. No. EPIC. No, mind-blowing and epic. I don’t have the right words to describe it, but when you’re up there you gain perspective of yourself and the world. That moment of clarity is fascinating.
I promised myself I would keep it short, since the images you’ll see speak louder than my humble writing attempt.
I just want to leave you with this.
The SUSPENDED TREADMILL RUN represents a tribute to running, for it has changed my mentality and improved the quality of my life.
And continues to do so.
Humbly yours, Machine Man!
